Eye Cream 101

Eye Cream 101 – Which Image Skincare eye cream is right for me?

Choosing the perfect eye cream can be challenging, am I right? There are so many formulas for so many different concerns. But don’t worry, I’ve put together some tips and recommendations to help you find the eye cream that will be best in improving your eye area GOALS!

Something I often hear in the treatment room is, ‘I can just use my serums and moisturiser in the eye area, isn’t that the same thing?’ Unfortunately, this isn’t really the case. Putting it simply, the skin around the eyes is much more thin and delicate than the rest of the face. As a result, the skin can absorb active ingredients in greater portions which can lead to reactions and sensitivity. Eye creams are made specifically with the sensitive skin around the eyes in mind. They feature intelligent delivery systems to allow the penetration of active ingredients in a gentle and effective way.

‘But what eye cream is for me?’… well let’s talk about different concerns that people may have and want to improve!

The obvious one: AGEING

Let’s face it, we are all going age at some point. But let’s AGE LATER! Loss of collagen and elastin is the biggest cause of ageing eyes, what we want to do is prevent the degradation of collagen and elastin and stimulate fibroblast activity. It is also equally as important that we hydrate the skin. In order for our delicate cells to function the way they are meant to, they NEED to be hydrated. Hydrated skin = healthy skin.

My top recommendations for ageing eyes are:

Ageless Total Lift Eye Cream

Max Stem Cel Eye Cream

PUFFY EYES:

Due to genetics, it is very common for the lower eye-lid to accumulate fluid, resulting in the look of ‘baggy/puffy’ eyes. In order to combat this, what we need is calming and soothing ingredients to relieve some of the uncomfortability that puffy eyes can bring. Antioxidants are an excellent ingredient for depuffing the eye area, these include Caffeine, Vitamin C and Green Tea extract. These ingredients are essential for calming down swelling and constricting blood vessels to minimise fluid.

My top recommendations for puffy eyes are:

Ormedic Balancing Lift Eye Gel

Vital C Eye Gel

On the dark side: DARK CIRCLES

Dark circles, also known as Periorbital Pigmentation can be caused by many factors such as genetics, excessive amount of pigmentation and post-inflammatory pigmentation. The main way to improve the appearance of dark circles is to reduce the overproduction of melanin around the eye area and increase the hydration levels. Tyrosinase inhibitors (melanin blockers) are super helpful in brightening and decreasing pigmentation under the eyes. Vitamin A is another great ingredient to have in an eye cream due to it’s amazing cell regeneration properties. In other words, it will aid in the fading of epidermal pigmentation.

My top recommendations for dark circles are:

Iluma Intense Brightening Eye Cream

Ageless Total Lift Eye Cream

DEHYDRATION (most of us)

To put it simply, dehydration is caused by the skin lacking in water content in the eye area. Due to the sensitive nature of the eye area, the skin has the tendency to suffer from TEWL (Trans-epidermal Water Loss). So, restoring hydration into the skin is vital fresh, healthy looking eyes. Hyaluronic Acid is a great ingredient to add moisture content into the skin; why? It holds 1000 times its weight in water, so it basically draws water to the skin. WINNING! And of course, Vitamin C. Vitamin C is hydrating, repairing, brightening and strengthening. It’s a no brainer!

My top recommendation for dehydrated eyes are:

Max Stem Cell Eye Cream

Vital C Eye Gel

WHAT IF I HAVE MULTIPLE CONCERNS?

Something I am often asked is, ‘What if I have multiple concerns?’ When asked this question, what I recommend is to focus on a primary and a secondary goal. What would you like to improve first? Set this concern as your primary goal. As your skin improves and starts to change (for the better), reassess your skin, and choose the eye cream which is best suited to your secondary goal. Alternatively, you may want to use two different eye creams to target both concerns at once (one in the morning and one at night).
