Great skin does rely on good product choice and correct usage but there are other factors that affect your skin too.
Genetics will largely determine your skin type – normal, dry, oily, acneic (acne prone) and genetically sensitive skin.
Normal skin is characterised as having a smooth texture, being free from blemishes and feeling neither too oily or dry.
Dry skin is a skin that lacks sufficient oil. It can sometimes feel rough and itchy. Usually dry skin type occurs all over the body not just the face. Don’t confuse dry skin with dehydrated skin. Dehydrated skin is lack of moisture within the skin.
Oily Skin is characterised by shine and a feeling of oiliness on touch. It can have open pores, blackheads, congestion and breakouts.
Acneic skin. The main factors behind acne is the over activity of oil glands which produce and a thicker, stickier sebum on the skin surface. This oil along with dead skin cells lead to blocking the pores which becomes the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Genetics play a role in an acne skin with external factors also being contributors.
Sensitive skin is a skin that is linked by a genetic predisposition. Sensitive skin types are more generally more fair and prone to skin redness or blushing, asthma and allergies. This type of skin is more delicate as it has a thinner epidermis. A sensitised skin is different to a sensitive skin type. Sensitised skin is a condition that is affected by your environment and lifestyle such as stress, hormones, diet, smoking, alcohol and incorrect product use, choice or ingredients.
Your everyday lifestyle and choices have an effect on your skin. Your diet, drinks, sun protection, smoking, pollution as well as the use of incorrect product can influence your skins overall look and condition. Stress and hormones also play an important part in achieving a healthy skin. The visible effects lifestyle has on the skin can include dehydration, sensitisation, cosmetic acne, hyper-pigmentation and even pre-mature ageing.
